Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in his message on International Mountain Day, emphasized Pakistan’s solidarity with the global community in recognizing the vital role mountains play in sustaining natural ecosystems. Observed on December 11, this year’s theme—“The Critical Role of Mountain Glaciers in Water, Food and Livelihoods”—holds deep relevance for Pakistan.
He highlighted the nation’s unique position as home to the Karakoram, Himalayas and Hindu Kush mountain ranges, hosting more than 7,000 glaciers including Siachen, Baltoro, Biafo and Batura. These glaciers form the backbone of Pakistan’s water system, feeding the Indus Basin, supporting agriculture, hydropower and drinking water supplies.
The Prime Minister warned that climate change, rapid glacier melt, GLOFs and environmental degradation pose serious threats to water security, biodiversity and livelihoods. He urged coordinated national efforts in climate resilience, sustainable land use, eco-friendly tourism and community engagement.
PM Shehbaz Sharif called on youth to become ambassadors for environmental protection and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to preserving Pakistan’s mountains and glaciers for future generations.
