Efforts to reconcile with estranged PML-N leader signal possible political comeback amid shifting national landscape

ISLAMABAD : In what could mark a turning point in Pakistan’s political arena, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid a surprise visit to the residence of estranged PML-N stalwart and former Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

According to sources, the two veteran politicians held a one-on-one meeting to discuss the evolving political situation and explore possibilities for Nisar’s reintegration into the party. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar also accompanied the prime minister during the visit.

The meeting has triggered speculation about a potential reconciliation between Nisar and the PML-N leadership, ending a rift that dates back to 2018 when Nisar parted ways with the party after a decades-long association.

Though details of the discussion remain confidential, insiders claim PM Shehbaz is keen to bring Nisar back into the political fold ahead of upcoming challenges, viewing his experience and influence in Rawalpindi politics as an asset.

This is not the first time the two have met privately. Last year, PM Shehbaz visited Nisar to offer condolences after the passing of his sister — a move many considered the first step toward political thawing.

Chaudhry Nisar, once considered one of PML-N’s central figures, had distanced himself from active politics, citing concerns over the party’s direction and a desire to follow his conscience. He contested the 2018 elections as an independent candidate and remained critical of what he called the “rise of political orphans” in party leadership.

Political observers suggest that Nisar’s return, if it materializes, could reshape internal dynamics within PML-N and possibly influence future electoral strategies in Punjab, especially Rawalpindi Division — his traditional stronghold.
