BEIJING: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary, has identified electric vehicles (EVs) as a pivotal area of future collaboration between Pakistan and China, underlining the country’s commitment to technological innovation and sustainable development.

Highlighting a major step forward, the minister announced that the Pakistan-China Business Conference, slated for September 4 in China, will serve as a crucial forum for bilateral industry engagement. “We are expecting over 250 companies from Pakistan and more than 200 from China,” he said, adding that the conference will include sector-specific matchmaking in EVs, solar energy, chemicals, and agriculture.

Iqbal stressed the dual benefits of establishing EV manufacturing in Pakistan: offering cost efficiency for Chinese investors and helping Pakistan transition away from fossil fuels. He called Chinese investment in local EV production a strategic move toward energy independence, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.

Pakistan’s commitment to clean transport is reflected in its National Electric Vehicle Policy 2025–2030, which sets ambitious goals—30% of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030 and a net-zero transport sector by 2060. The policy includes significant incentives such as tax relief, subsidies, and support for EV charging infrastructure, while placing a strong emphasis on localization and manufacturing.

Several Chinese firms including BYD and Chery are already playing a vital role in Pakistan’s EV landscape, through vehicle assembly, infrastructure expansion, and helping position Pakistan as a potential regional hub for electric mobility.
