ISLAMABAD Members of the National Assembly from across the political spectrum have thrown their support behind the government’s plan to establish a Green University, terming it a progressive step toward addressing climate change and promoting environmental consciousness in Pakistan.
Speaking to PTV News outside Parliament House on Thursday, legislators praised the initiative for its long-term vision and potential to equip the younger generation with the tools needed to tackle climate-related challenges.
Dr. Shaista Jadoon, MNA from PML-N, described the initiative as both “timely and essential,” stating, “This university will serve as a hub for climate research and innovation at a time when global warming threatens ecosystems worldwide.”
Syed Aminul Haq, MNA from MQM, lauded the broader scope of the government’s environmental agenda. “Measures like emission reduction, green energy promotion, and support for electric vehicles reflect a comprehensive approach. The Green University will further strengthen this direction,” he said.
Independent MNA Malik Shakir Bashir emphasized the need for collective action, urging, “The government alone cannot win this fight. We need civil society, academia, and youth to actively participate in this movement.”
Lawmakers underscored that a central goal of the proposed Green University is to engage young people directly in climate action and sustainability. They believe this educational initiative will build a future generation better prepared to respond to environmental threats.
Highlighting the urgent impact of climate change on agriculture, MNA Ali Musa Gilani stressed the need for awareness at all levels. “Our food security is at stake. Crop failures, water scarcity, and changing weather patterns are already affecting farmers. Educating the public is critical,” he noted.
The strong endorsement from parliamentarians signals growing political consensus around climate action, with the Green University project now seen as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s strategy to combat environmental degradation and empower its youth for a sustainable future.
