GILGIT:
Torrential rains and flash floods have caused widespread devastation across Gilgit-Baltistan, forcing the government to declare 37 locations in various districts as calamity-hit zones, according to provincial government spokesperson Faizullah Firaq.

Diamer District is the worst affected, with 12 areas placed under emergency status. Gilgit District has 9 such locations, followed by 5 in Ghizer, 4 each in Skardu and Shigar, 2 in Ghanche, and 1 each in Nagar and Kharmang.

Preliminary damage estimates exceed Rs. 20 billion. At least 22 vehicles have been swept away, and 10 people — mostly tourists — have tragically lost their lives. Four others were injured and are receiving medical care, while rescue teams continue efforts to trace 10 to 15 missing tourists.

In response to the disaster, the Gilgit-Baltistan government has initiated rehabilitation projects worth Rs. 440 million, prioritizing the restoration of drinking water, electricity, and road connectivity. Relief supplies — including tents, blankets, food items, and kitchen sets — have already been distributed to affected families.

Firaq emphasized that the rehabilitation of 509 destroyed homes remains a major challenge but assured that the government is fully engaged in providing support. He expressed optimism that the Prime Minister of Pakistan will soon extend both assistance and solidarity to the affected populations.
