The Green Electric Bus Service was inaugurated in Gujar Khan on Monday, the first at the tehsil level under the flagship project launched by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to provide modern and efficient travel facilities to the public.
The provincial ministers Khawaja Manshaullah Butt and Bilal Akbar Khan were chief guests at the opening ceremony. Members of the National and Provincial Assemblies and district administration officials were also present. The service will operate between the Gujar Khan Bus Terminal, Sohawa city and the Police Complex.
Speaking at the event, Minister Khawaja Manshaullah Butt said the chief minister had initiated the electric bus project to offer citizens contemporary travel amenities and that services had now been extended to the tehsil level.
He added that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) during every tenure in government had focused on launching development projects for public welfare and that CM Maryam had set the province on the path of progress, introducing initiatives such as the Suthra Punjab scheme, ration cards, Green Bus Service and Sasta Sahulat Bazaars.
Provincial Minister for Transport Bilal Akbar Khan said the electric bus service had been launched in line with the chief minister’s vision to provide safe and quality travel to the people of Gujar Khan. He added that 14 electric buses would operate in the area, while senior citizens, women and students would travel free of charge.
He noted that the green bus service promoted an environmentally friendly policy and ensured women’s safety, with each bus equipped with seven cameras.
He further stated that a total of 1,100 buses would be deployed across Punjab this year, with 1,500 buses planned for next year.
Member of the Punjab Assembly Raja Shaukat Aziz Bhatti and PML-N leader Javed Ikhlas praised the chief minister for resuming development initiatives in the district, highlighting that projects stalled in 2018 had been revived over the past two years under her leadership.
